Outdoor Play and Learning

Our OPAL play programme provides rich opportunities for children to be active, creative and collaborative. Through high-quality play experiences, pupils develop confidence, resilience and key life skills.

At St Matthias, we recognise that play is a vital part of children’s development. Through our involvement in the OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) programme, we aim to provide high-quality play opportunities that support pupils’ physical, social and emotional wellbeing.

Play is carefully considered as part of the school day, enabling pupils to develop key skills such as co-operation, resilience, creativity and problem-solving. We understand that children learn not only through formal teaching, but also through meaningful play experiences. As a significant proportion of time in school is spent at playtimes, we are committed to ensuring this time is purposeful, engaging and enriching.

The OPAL programme is based on extensive research and has been successfully implemented in schools across the UK and internationally. It supports schools in creating play environments that promote active, imaginative and inclusive play.

Our outdoor spaces have been developed to provide a wide range of opportunities for exploration and creativity. Pupils engage in activities such as role play, construction, physical play and creative expression, using resources including loose parts, natural materials and open-ended equipment. These materials encourage pupils to be imaginative, collaborate with others and take ownership of their play.

Sustainability is an important part of our approach. We use a range of recycled and open-ended resources, enabling pupils to create, adapt and explore in their own way. What may appear simple or everyday materials provide rich opportunities for learning and development.

Through this approach, pupils develop confidence, independence and positive relationships, contributing to a happy and inclusive school environment.

Pupils at St Matthias experience high-quality play that supports their wellbeing, enhances their learning and helps them develop the skills they need to thrive both in school and beyond.
