Modern Foreign Languages: Spanish

Our Spanish curriculum develops pupils’ confidence in communication and understanding of different cultures. Through speaking, listening, reading and writing, pupils build language skills over time and become enthusiastic language learners.

At St Matthias, our Spanish curriculum aims to develop pupils’ confidence and enjoyment in learning a new language, while broadening their understanding of different cultures. Lessons from EYFS through to Year 6 are taught weekly by our specialist Spanish teacher.

Learning is carefully structured so that pupils build their knowledge of vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation over time. Pupils learn to communicate in practical ways, including speaking, listening, reading and writing.

Pupils are taught through interactive and engaging approaches, allowing them to practise language in meaningful contexts and express their ideas with increasing confidence. Cultural understanding is embedded throughout, helping pupils to develop a wider global perspective.

Knowledge and skills are revisited regularly, supporting pupils to remember more and use language with greater fluency.

Through this approach, pupils develop confidence, curiosity and the skills to continue language learning in the future.
