Forest School

Our Forest School programme, delivered in partnership with The Garden Classroom, provides pupils with regular opportunities to learn in nature. Through hands-on experiences, pupils develop confidence, resilience and a lasting connection to the natural world.

At St Matthias, we are committed to providing rich and meaningful learning experiences beyond the classroom. Through our partnership with The Garden Classroom, we offer pupils the opportunity to take part in an Urban Forest School programme, supporting their development through regular outdoor learning.

Our Forest School provision enables pupils to experience hands-on, nature-based learning in local green spaces. Sessions are carefully designed to support pupils’ physical, emotional and social development, while fostering a deep and lasting connection with the natural world.

Learning takes place through play, exploration and supported risk-taking, allowing pupils to develop confidence, resilience and independence. Pupils engage in a range of practical activities such as den building, tool use, fire lighting, nature identification and creative outdoor tasks, all led by trained Forest School practitioners.

The programme is delivered through regular sessions across a term, providing pupils with consistent opportunities to develop their skills and deepen their understanding over time. This sustained approach enables children to build strong relationships, teamwork skills and a sense of responsibility for the environment.

Forest School also supports learning across the curriculum, enriching subjects such as science, geography and wellbeing, while promoting curiosity and engagement. Outdoor learning has been shown to enhance pupils’ wellbeing, communication and collaboration, as well as their enjoyment of school.

Through this approach, pupils develop a greater awareness of the world around them and an appreciation of their role within it. For many children, this provides valuable opportunities to explore green spaces and connect with nature in ways they may not otherwise experience.

As a result, pupils at St Matthias develop confidence, resilience and a strong connection to the natural world, equipping them with the skills and attitudes to care for themselves, others and the environment.
