History

Our history curriculum develops pupils’ understanding of the past through the study of key events, people and societies. Through working with sources and exploring different perspectives, pupils build knowledge over time and learn to think like historians.

At St Matthias, our history curriculum provides pupils with a secure understanding of the past and how it has shaped the world today. Pupils develop a strong sense of chronology, change and diversity, including an inclusive understanding of British history.

Learning is structured and supports pupils understanding of chronologically, enabling pupils to build knowledge of key periods such as Roman Britain, the Anglo-Saxons, Vikings, medieval Britain and the Industrial Revolution, as well as the World Wars. Black history is interwoven throughout to ensure an accurate and representative curriculum.

Pupils develop as historians by working with sources, artefacts and different interpretations, learning to question evidence and understand perspective. Local history and global studies help pupils make meaningful links between the past and present.

Knowledge is revisited and deepened over time, enabling pupils to retain key concepts and apply their understanding.

Through this approach, pupils develop enquiry skills, critical thinking and an appreciation of how the past influences the present.
