Overall Effectiveness – Expected
St Matthias is a strong and improving school where pupils achieve well from their starting points. We serve a diverse and highly complex community, and our Christian vision of ‘faith, hope and love’ underpins everything we do.
Outcomes for pupils are positive across the school, particularly for disadvantaged pupils, who achieve significantly above national averages. Children build strong foundations in the Early Years, phonics and reading, and are well prepared for secondary school.
Leaders know the school well. Through careful evaluation and a clear focus on inclusion and high expectations, we ensure that all pupils are supported to succeed academically, socially and emotionally.
Inclusion – Strong
Inclusion is central to life at St Matthias. We are proud of our diverse community and ensure that every child feels valued, safe and able to succeed.
High-quality teaching, a strong focus on language and a trauma-informed approach enable all pupils — including those with SEND, EAL and those facing disadvantage — to thrive. We work closely with families and external professionals to provide timely and effective support.
Our inclusive culture is a strength of the school, recognised in our SIAMS inspection, where we were described as a “cohesive community where people are valued for who they are.”
Curriculum and Teaching – Expected
Our curriculum is ambitious, well-sequenced and designed to meet the needs of our pupils. It builds knowledge and skills progressively from the Early Years to Year 6.
Teaching is consistent and effective. Teachers use clear explanations, careful modelling and ongoing assessment to ensure pupils understand and remember more over time. Adaptations are made so that all pupils, including those with additional needs, can access the full curriculum.
Our curriculum is shaped by our vision and ensures pupils are well prepared for the next stage of their education and for life beyond school.
Achievement – Expected
Pupils achieve well across the curriculum, particularly in reading, writing and mathematics.
Strong early teaching in phonics and reading ensures pupils develop confidence and fluency. Outcomes at the end of Key Stage 2 are above national averages, and disadvantaged pupils achieve particularly well.
Leaders continue to focus on further improving progress for all groups, including increasing the number of pupils achieving greater depth.
Attendance and Behaviour – Expected
Our approach to behaviour and attendance is rooted in our values and strong relationships. Pupils behave well and understand expectations, creating a calm and purposeful learning environment.
Attendance is improving and remains a key priority. We work closely with families to support regular attendance and address any barriers early.
Our trauma-informed approach ensures that pupils with additional needs are well supported and able to succeed.
Personal Development and Wellbeing – Strong
Personal development is a significant strength of the school. Through a carefully planned programme, pupils develop confidence, resilience and a strong sense of identity.
Wellbeing is prioritised through our curriculum, pastoral support and enrichment opportunities. Pupils benefit from a wide range of experiences, including trips, clubs, leadership opportunities and creative projects.
Our Christian vision supports pupils to grow into respectful, thoughtful and responsible members of society.
Leadership and Governance – Strong
Leaders at all levels have a clear vision and high expectations for all pupils. Decisions are informed by careful evaluation and a deep understanding of the school community.
Staff are well supported through high-quality professional development, and wellbeing is prioritised. Governors provide effective support and challenge, ensuring strong accountability.
Leadership has a clear impact on improving outcomes and maintaining high standards across the school.
Early Years – Strong
Children in the Early Years make a strong start to their education. The curriculum is carefully designed to develop language, confidence and independence.
Staff provide high-quality interactions and create a stimulating environment where children can explore, learn and grow. Strong foundations in communication, early reading, writing and mathematics prepare children well for Key Stage 1.
Safeguarding – Met
Safeguarding is a priority at St Matthias. There is a strong culture where all staff take responsibility for keeping children safe.
Clear systems are in place to identify and respond to concerns quickly. We work closely with external agencies and families to ensure children receive the support they need.
Pupils feel safe in school and know who they can talk to if they are worried.
